The CERTE is a public research institution

(about 90 multidisciplinary permanent researchers)

established in 2005, as a part of the Borj-Cedria Technopark. It operates under the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the Republic of Tunisia. The CERTE is also member of several national and international committees as well as application-oriented networks, specialized in water related solutions. Its main mission is to carry out research development and innovation activities and technological development in water and to transfer the scientific results to the socio-economic sectors. CERTE is very active at the national, Mediterranean, and international levels in the whole water cycle (governance, management, RDI, assessment) including the treatment and valorisation of conventional and non-conventional water and the adaptation to climate change.

Laboratory for Desalination and Valorisation of Natural Waters (LaDVEN)

The LaDVEN, created in 2006, completes CERTE's centre of expertise in the field of water. It was set up at the request of the Ministry of Agriculture's Rural Engineering Department and SONEDE. Its first action with these two organisations dates back to 1994, to prevent the scaling of geothermal water. Subsequently, several aspects relating to the quality of natural water and treatment or decontamination processes were developed. The main themes of LaDVEN are

DWatMed Conference

The first scientific seminar on bottled water, entitled “Bottled water: Reality and Perspectives”, was held on June 26, 2024, at the ISTIC – Technopole of Borj-Cédria. Organized by the Laboratory of Desalination and Valorization of Natural Waters (LaDVEN) of Water Research and Technologies Center (CERTE), the event offered a comprehensive overview of the bottled water sector in Tunisia. Key issues highlighted included health safety, microplastic contamination, environmental governance, and the rising demand driven by socio-economic and climatic changes. The seminar concluded with concrete recommendations to strengthen regulatory monitoring, quality control systems, and technological innovation in the field.

Building on the success of this first edition, CERTE, through its LaDVEN laboratory, is proud to announce the 2nd DWatMed 2026: Drinking Water Mediterranean Congress, dedicated to Tap, Bottled and Bulk Waters. This new edition brings together researchers, practitioners, and policymakers from across the Mediterranean to explore critical challenges related to water quality, emerging micropollutants, and equitable access to safe drinking water.
